Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality History and Theory

Trends in Technology

Description: Remaining current with technology connected to Extended Reality (XR) is a challenge in the rapidly changing landscape of hardware, software and social media. Students will discover how various industries are adopting the latest XR technologies from e-commerce to manufacturing. This course will explore contemporary aspects of platforms and delivery of XR content to users in addition to developments in creation and consumption within the field.

Content Production Pipeline

Description: Producing content for the needs of new realities requires thoughtful planning and communication between teams. In the case of VR, you will learn how virtual worlds are constructed from raw digital assets and the complexity of all the components required in building an immersive experience. Compiling 360 videos will require video footage and capturing audio to provide the user with a seamless live-action experience. Students will explore AR experiences that transform a user's surroundings with integrating effects that follow movements of the user.

Virtual Reality Tech Lab I

Description: This lab will lead the student through the process of design, problem solving, creation of prototypes, and initial testing of experiences constructed from available tools. Students will work in teams while exploring visuals, audio, interaction, development, and publishing builds to multiple targets for testing and feedback. The final project will include the planning, implementation, and delivery of an extended reality experience.

Virtual Reality Story I

Description: Telling stories is an activity that humankind has been doing since before language and writing were invented. Narrative design for extended reality projects differs greatly from the traditional storytelling used in broadcast or film. This course will investigate the mechanisms of classic and modern narrative and provide tools to tell an interactive story.

Virtual Reality Interaction Design I

Description: Developing truly immersive experiences requires a clearly designed interface to help users interact with a virtual world. This course investigates how we combine human-centered design techniques with leading edge technologies. For it to be a truly immersive experience, intuitive navigation for the user is critical and this course will help students develop those skills. Students will also learn the constraints, integration, and risks of the current iterations of software and hardware. From haptic gloves to touchscreens, we examine how we engage with machines, data, and each other.

3D Animation Fundamentals

Description: Within this program students will learn the fundamental aspects of the production process and understand the requirements associated with the production pipeline for 3D animation. Traditional design, drawing and storytelling skills to the latest computer (software/hardware) skills will be examined. Students will create characters and customized environments which contribute towards the creation of unique content that is a building block of VR content.

Description: This course focuses on career management skills needed to navigate the evolving workplace. Students will evaluate their skills, attitudes, and expectations within their chosen careers and explore emerging trends in the workplace. Students will refine their networking strategies and create marketing documents to position them for success. Mock interviews will provide the opportunity for practice, feedback, and reflection as students prepare for future interviews. Students will explore communication strategies that support workplace success and advancement. By the end of this course, students will have created a personalized career management plan.

Virtual Reality Environment Construction

Description: Building extended realities requires realistic and believable environments. This course will build on previous knowledge of creating assets to help build these virtual worlds inside a game engine. Students will learn the importance of well-placed objects, particles, lights, and audio cues within an immersive environment.

Prototyping and Iteration

Description: Prototyping is one of the most valuable tools for creating extended realities. Virtual Reality Production Management

Description: End to end understanding, oversight, and managing of XR production through prototyping, testing, and delivery are essential to any project. Successful management depends on properly assessing the needs and challenges of a project and aligning key people for the tasks. Students will learn how to identify challenges, including costs and barriers, while managing XR projects. This course will also review current global market and ecosystems changing the way consumers interact with products.

Virtual Reality Story II

Description: This course represents the culmination of the skills required to create a virtual experience. Description: Exploration and experimentation of concepts gained from the other courses will be the focus of this lab.   2. Communicate effectively with colleagues and clients to ensure production processes and workflows are followed through all stages of production
  3. Complete the production of 2D and 3D visual elements to create aesthetically relevant assets that promote exploration within the virtual environments
  4. Manage the production pipeline to meet schedules and budget constraints of a virtual reality production
  5. Select appropriate hardware and software protocols to create various forms of extended reality (XR) such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).
