Description: This self-directed course focuses on introducing new students to the supports, services, and opportunities available at Conestoga College. Placement and Career Readiness

Description:

The course will cover the practical aspects of securing a placement in the recreation and sport services field. This course provides students with the required tools in the job application process to be career ready and prepare for their first work integrated learning experience. The student will examine strategies for accessing available supports and opportunities related to the job search, cover letter and resume creation, and interviewing skills. Successful completion of this course is a requirement for starting Field Placement within the recreation and sport services program.

Safety in the Workplace
OHS1320

Description: This course focuses on developing awareness and skills for the student to safely manage and conduct him or herself within a variety of employment settings. Through the units of the course, participants will have the opportunity to enhance their understanding and knowledge of general Health and Safety guidelines, including WHMIS, Fire Safety and Workplace Violence. The unit on Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act will instruct the student on the requirements for Accessible Customer Service and Integrated Accessibility Standard Regulations. General information on Safe Driving, Privacy of Information and Hand Washing will be addressed as well. The course also provides participants with critical information regarding their insurance coverage (WSIB or other) while employed. As well as guidelines to follow in the event of an injury. Participants will receive a printable Record of Completion upon successful conclusion of this course, in order to demonstrate awareness of safe working practices to their employers.

This course will introduce students to concepts related to healthy living for individuals, groups, and communities. This course will identify the foundations of inclusion and access in recreation and sport programs and services exploring how these principles impact feelings of belonging and contribute to meaningful community building and engagement. This course is designed to provide students with knowledge of financial management activities in recreation and sport to support decision-making and planning with an aim to strengthen organizations. Students will recommend fees and charges for recreation and sport services with an understanding of market value. This course explores the foundational elements of program planning in recreation and sport services. Through active learning experiences, students will utilize assessment tools to design and implement an innovative and inclusive sport, physical activity, or recreation program. They will analyze revenue generation strategies while creating detailed program budgets and will discuss funding options to promote sustainable program delivery. This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the role of sport in promoting social change and development. Students will learn about the principles and practices of sport for development, including how sport can be used to address social and health issues, promote education and gender equality, and support peace-building efforts.
