Admission procedures
- An academic strength is calculated by averaging the submitted marks of required subjects. If more than one mark is received for a required subject, the highest mark will be used in the calculation.
- Ten (10) additional marks are added to each Advanced level, OAC, U, U/C, and post-secondary course used in the calculation of academic strength.
- Applicants meeting minimum academic requirements (85% in 2022) are invited to begin the selection process which requires them to submit a digital portfolio. The digital portfolio gives applicants an opportunity to present non-academic information relevant to success in the Paramedic program. Details and directions regarding the preparation and submission of the digital portfolio will be sent to eligible applicants.
- The digital portfolio involves a short essay response and gives applicants the opportunity to present non-academic credentials that support their application. Digital portfolios should include proof of all the following :
- Volunteer experience.
- Leadership experience (e.g., leadership course, letter of reference demonstrating leadership qualities, coaching, or refereeing).
- Certifications (e.g., language certifications, diplomas, gentle persuasive approach (GPA) certificate or Equity Diversity Inclusive Accessible (EDIA) certificate).
- Earned awards (e.g., scholarships, sports awards, or bursaries).
- Any document not listed above that highlights your attributes and skills as a potential Primary Care Paramedic.
- Selected applicants will be sent detailed information about submitting a digital portfolio.
- Final selection is made using a formula employing the academic strength in conjunction with the score on the digital portfolio.
- A sound English background is important for success in this program and is considered during the admission selection process. Minimum cutoffs may apply.
Program requirements
- Introductory word processing or keyboarding is required.
- Mandatory work-integrated learning (WIL) document requirements must be completed by students prior to student WIL experiences. Successful WIL completion is required for students to progress to program completion. To qualify for WIL experiences, students must present the following at the start of the program in accordance with pre-admission information provided by the College:
- A complete immunization record including MMR, Tdap, varicella, polio, COVID-19 and hepatitis B. Seasonal flu vaccination is required during flu season (October – March).
- TB Testing: evidence of current 2-step or previous 2-step + current 1-step if more than one year has passed since 2-step testing.
- Standard First Aid and CPR – BLS level
- An annual Police Check for Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS). Police Checks must be clear of any unpardoned criminal offences. An unclear criminal record will result in the inability to participate in WIL experiences meaning the student will not be able to successfully complete the program. Acceptance for WIL is at the discretion of the agency; some agencies may request students to provide a VSS completed within six months of WIL start date.
- This is an eText program. Learn about our eText initiative.
- A Class “F” Licence will be required for students prior to the start of the second year of the program.
- Physical fitness and lifting requirements will be evaluated. Completion of the program is dependent on successful demonstration of these requirements (two-person lifts and transfers including equipment and a 95.5 kg/210 lb. patient).
- Applicants should display integrity, reliability, maturity, self-direction, determination, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, poise, and leadership attributes.
- Medical requirements must be met and maintained throughout the program and include completion of health reviews, immunization schedules, chest x-rays and other medical requirements.
- In addition, students are responsible for costs associated with respirator fit testing required for WIL experiences.
- Applicants are advised that all competencies specified for this program must be met, and, therefore, attendance in class, lab and WIL experience is essential.
