Description: This course focuses on career management skills needed to navigate the evolving workplace. Students will evaluate their skills, attitudes, and expectations within their chosen careers and explore emerging trends in the workplace. Students will refine their networking strategies and create marketing documents to position them for success. Mock interviews will provide the opportunity for practice, feedback, and reflection as students prepare for future interviews. Students will explore communication strategies that support workplace success and advancement. By the end of this course, students will have created a personalized career management plan.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Organizational Contexts

Description:

This course will examine factors that affect individuals' and teams' performance in organizations using equity, diversity and inclusion frameworks. It will analyze how theories can be applied to explain such factors as motivation, attitudes, teambuilding skills, leadership style, decision making, stress and management abilities. Other features such as Canadian organizational culture and change will also be analyzed to determine their impact on behaviour in an organization. Practical workplace examples will be analyzed through discussion, case studies, and team projects.

Intercultural Communication in Contemporary Canada

Description:

This course exposes students to the intercultural communication theories and practices needed to successfully communicate with diverse groups of people both in Canada and abroad. Students will gain the tools needed to communicate with others within and between cultures. Emphasis will be placed on developing intercultural communication skills needed for the Canadian workplace. Areas of focus include cultural influences on communication, self-awareness, intercultural conflict, Canadian and international mandates and legislation, as well as ethical concerns related to intercultural communications and its many dimensions. By the end of this course, students will be equipped to communicate effectively and respectfully in various intercultural contexts.

Principles of Management

This course introduces students to the key functions and roles of managers including the principles and techniques used by managers to carry out their responsibilities. Key functional areas include planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling. The course also covers the role of managers as innovators. Students will apply management principles and concepts to various work situations in order to overcome challenges, resolve problems and enhance organizational effectiveness. Writing for Diverse Audiences

Description:

This course will use a critical media literacy framework to provide students with an opportunity to practice communicating in writing in a culturally sensitive manner to diverse audiences. Students will practice letter writing, online communication procedures and etiquette, the preparation of reports, and creating meeting minutes, media releases, and executive summaries. The impact media has on personal and professional contexts, as well as ways to mitigate negative effects and maximize productivity, retention, and satisfaction will also be discussed.

Applied Leadership

Description:

This course will build on Leadership Theory with a focus on applying contemporary leadership models, design thinking and adaptive reasoning to develop productive operational teams. Students will learn and practice conflict resolution management and negotiations skills. Team-building processes will be practiced, with the objective of understanding what makes a high-performance team. Students will also apply their skills as reflective practitioners, through the lens of global citizenship, equity principles and intercultural workplace belonging, inclusive and intercultural communication practices, and intercultural change management models and frameworks.

Leadership Capstone

Description:

The capstone project is an experiential learning project during the second semester of the program that enables students to apply the leadership skills they have learned throughout the program. Students will apply the concept of a growth mindset to a personal development project of their own choosing. Through individual written reflections, group discussions, and presentations students will practice being reflective practitioners.

Introduction to Project Management

Description: This course provides the practical knowledge to prepare for starting and completing a project successfully. It will cover the components and tasks related to complex projects that often involve multiple functional teams and departments. You will explore how the knowledge areas of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) are applied during each phase of a project's life cycle as well as the processes related to successful project management. An overview of status reporting and the use of MS Project will be covered. This knowledge will help establish priorities and effectively manage your projects. It will be of particular interest to those students who have a long-term goal of attaining the Project Management Professional (PMP)® designation certified by the Project Management Institute.

Group Dynamics

Description:

This course will focus on comprehensive theoretical understanding of group process, personal skill development and application through intensive teamwork. These skills are of critical importance in both professional and social settings. Through guided exploration and application of theoretical paradigms and practical strategies, students will achieve the necessary skills to succeed in and lead effective teams. The course consists in an intensive experiential approach - learning by doing - enabling participants to become effective, practiced team members with experience applying skills necessary for leadership, analysis and evaluation, problem solving, and conflict management. Individual and team activities enhance participants' skills to work with a variety of personalities in diverse situations, and to effectively assume various professional roles within a team.
