Ethics in Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Management

This course will examine the ethical framework required to implement an appropriate model for patient self-management. Principals of learning will include equity, respect, empowerment, participation, privacy and confidentiality, boundaries, and patient autonomy. Students will learn to apply this framework when considering variables like race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and culture related to managing chronic diseases.

Social Determinants of Health and Quality of Life

Description:

Social determinants of health are a broad group of personal and socio-economic factors that can greatly affect a person's health. This course will look beyond the biological aspects of disease and instead will explore various social determinants of health and their effect on quality of life. Students will learn about income and social status, education and literacy, employment and working conditions, social environments, race, gender, and culture among others.

Health Promotion and Disease Management Across the Lifespan 1
NURS8417

Description:

This course will examine different strategic principals of prevention as well as self-management of chronic diseases across the lifespan. It will build upon a nurses existing base of knowledge of the theoretical body systems involved in some of the most prevalent chronic diseases affecting Canadians from infancy to geriatric age. Students will focus their learning on cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, mental illness, cancer, and addiction. In addition, students will also be guided to connect their previous learnings about Ecological Framework and behaviour change at the individual, interpersonal, community, organizational and public policy level.

Child and Youth Health and Well-being

Description:

This course focuses on the most prevalent chronic illnesses that affect children from infancy through to adolescence. Students will learn how influencing and modifying certain health behaviors from an early age can significantly impact overall health as an adult, as well as the most effective settings to implement Health Promotion Strategies for children and their care givers. Topics will also include advocating for a child, consent, communication, nature vs nurture, and the collaborative healthcare model.

This course will teach students the various frameworks and theories that influence and reinforce behaviour change on both an individual and interpersonal level, allowing patients to better manage their health. Topics will include levels of influence, the stages of change model, self-regulation, incentive motivation, moral disengagement, access to community services and different models of shared care.

In this course, students will examine and review existing public policies and services that guide and influence change in Health care as well as the development and implementation of new policy frameworks. Areas of review include The Ottawa Charter, The Bangkok Charter, The Adelaide Statement on Health in all Policies, The Public Health Agency of Canada, and Intersectoral Collaboration.

Chronic Mental Health and Chronic Disease Management

Description:

Chronic disease can cause, affect and/or be affected by mental health. In this course students will investigate the various ways in which mental health conditions and chronic disease can impact each other. Addressing the complexity of these two comorbidities across the lifespan, will allow students to provide better care and disease management support for their patients. Topics will include depression, anxiety, stress-management, Form 1 Assessments, relevant legislation and community services and support.

This course builds upon the knowledge gained in Health Promotion and Disease Management Across the Lifespan 1. Topics covered in this course will include Organizational Health Promotion, health education vs health communication, effective assessment tools, allopathic vs holistic approaches and engaging in a collaborative healthcare strategy.

Health Promotion Capstone Project

The Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Management program will culminate in a capstone project where learners will showcase the knowledge, they have acquired throughout the program to apply a comprehensive understanding of health promotion strategies and disease management principles to real-world health challenges.
