Residential (Low Rise) Sheet Metal Installer (Apprenticeship)

Program description

This 360-hour program, consisting of two 180-hour levels, is designed to provide you with a theoretical knowledge of residential, low rise, low velocity installations of air handling or ventilation systems, together with the practical training necessary to complement your on-the-job training.

Program outcomes

  1. Identify materials used in the trade, types and applications of seams, notches, connector allowances and notching techniques.
  2. Identify safe work practices.
  3. Describe environmental protection practices.
  4. Select and use hand tools, power tools, material handling equipment, ladders and scaffolding effectively and safely to perform residential sheet metal installations.
  5. Produce and interpret sketches, drawings, and specifications to determine modifications or work to be performed.
  6. Read and interpret related codes, manuals and specifications, and identify symbols used in residential drawings.
  7. Describe the requirement of a duct distribution system and the planning requirements for the installation.
  8. Demonstrate the methods for connecting, hanging, and fastening in the low-rise residential installation.
  9. Demonstrate the assembly and installation of duct work and fittings required in the low-rise residential installation.
  10. Describe and apply directives in the completion of work assignments, communicate with tradespersons, customers and others.
  11. Complete job site reports and describe injury reporting procedures.
  12. Install residential heating equipment, residential ventilation systems, residential air side cooling components, and residential air system accessories.
  13. Describe principles of home construction.
  14. Identify load bearing and non-load bearing walls and supports.
  15. Install supply air duct work, return air duct work, and grills and registers.
  16. Describe principles and properties of air.

Graduate opportunities

A Residential (Low Rise) Sheet Metal Installer installs residential air-handling and ventilation systems in low-rise (four storeys or fewer) residential buildings that do not have common conditioned areas. The work is done in self-contained, single family dwellings.
