Program description
Introduction to construction trades: carpentry, welding and electrical
Explore the trades. Build your skills. Start a career in construction.
Take your first step into Ontario's skilled trades with the Pre-Apprenticeship Introduction to Construction Trades program at Conestoga College. This fully funded, 37‑week, hands-on program is designed for high school graduates who want to explore construction careers while building the foundational skills employers are looking for.
Delivered at Conestoga's Tollgate Technological Skills Centre in Brantford, this immersive pre‑apprenticeship program offers hands‑on, practical training in three in‑demand construction trades. You'll gain real‑world experience and explore your options before committing to an apprenticeship or further training.
Students rotate through shop‑based training aligned with key Ontario apprenticeship trades, including General Carpentry (403A), Electrician – Construction and Maintenance (309A), and Welding (456A). Through applied theory and hands‑on learning, you'll gain confidence using tools and equipment, understand job‑site expectations and experience what a typical day looks like in each trade.
Safety is a top priority. Training includes construction safety, safe work practices, site orientation and Working at Heights. You'll also strengthen math, communication and employability skills, giving you a solid foundation for success in construction environments.
Graduates are well prepared to pursue apprenticeships, entry‑level positions in construction or continue in trade‑related post‑secondary programs.
