Description:

This course explores the intersections of reading, writing, and critical thinking with an emphasis on academic and workplace competencies for the 21st century. Through regular reading, writing, and discussion, students will develop the ability to analyze texts, construct well-supported arguments, and express their ideas effectively by learning to meet the expectations of selected audiences, purposes, and contexts. The course also provides a foundation for understanding the complexities of research, information literacy, and ethical communication in relation to various contemporary social and cultural issues.

Introduction to Installation

Description: The student will identify and select hand tools, power tools, material handling equipment, ladders and scaffolding. Students will demonstrate the safe and proper use of hand and power tools, as per manufacturers specifications. Students will identify the requirements of duct distribution systems and the planning requirements for the installation. Students will identify methods for connecting, and installation of duct systems required in low-rise residential installations.

Introduction to Gas

Description: Students will be introduced to the characteristics, properties, basic fundamentals, and safety aspects associated with natural gas and propane. They will describe the combustion process, and the problems arising from incomplete combustion as well as identify the different testing methods for carbon monoxide and gas leaks. Students will identify and select the appropriate tools and documentation, to properly and safely install a piping, tubing system.

HVAC Systems
GAST1220

Description: Students will continue to build upon skills to address types and classifications of gas and propane fired appliances, the ignition systems found on gas fired appliances, and the associated safe handling practices. Students will interpret manufacturers’ specifications and drawings to place and install various classes of gas fired equipment. Emphasis will be placed on reading schematic wiring diagrams, wiring, and troubleshooting control circuits containing relays, timers, and controls. In addition, students will be introduced to customer communication skills.

Gas Regulations and Worksite Documentation
MECH1930

Description:

Students will complete documentation including work orders, and other communication with tradespersons, customers and others. Students will learn the Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code, Propane Storage and Handling Code and how to interpret various regulations such as the Technical Standards and Safety Act 2000, and industry related Ontario Regulations. Students will identify the appropriate steps and procedures to follow when a hazardous situation arises and describe how to coordinate services to ensure safety and customer concerns are addressed.

HVAC Installation

Description:

In this course, students will use the prior knowledge to perform the installation of various residential sheet metal and HVAC systems. Including supply and return air ducts, heating equipment and ventilation systems. Students will be introduced principles and properties of air as it relates to residential duct systems
