Credential: 4-Year Bachelor of Community and Criminal Justice (Honours)

This four-year Bachelor degree program prepares students with the broad capabilities required for careers within the community and criminal justice systems while focusing on the analytical skills to comprehend the psycho-social causes and effects of crime.

Students develop the ability to analyze how individuals develop and respond to the realities of their unique social context and the ability to evaluate the various responses within the community and society to prevent and respond to crime.

Graduates will be ready to research, initiate, implement, and evaluate social policy and programs and are well prepared to exercise leadership within criminal justice services with strong problem solving, systemic/critical thinking, inter-personal and inter-professional communication skills.

Conestoga College facilitates recruitment on an ongoing basis - there are no hard deadlines. Typical time frames for work terms are listed below.

Postings are accepted beginning four months before the start of a term until all students have secured employment provided the minimum 12 consecutive weeks of full-time work is met.

Conestoga College collects data on hourly wages of co-operative education students and offers suggested ranges as a service to employers for the purpose of establishing fair and competitive compensation.

Our experience has been that employers increase wages as skills increase, particularly when employing students for more advanced work terms. The Co-operative Education Office can provide assistance to employers in establishing appropriate wage rates.

Work term capabilities

  • Understand both the formal and informal development of communities and apply strategies to build community capacity, enhance safety, prevent and reduce crime and recidivism
  • Analyze and critically examine research, evaluation methods, legislation, policy and practice and the implications for the justice sector and other social systems
  • Develop research proposals and conduct general social research with an awareness of research and interpersonal ethics
  • Perform independent primary and secondary research using library and Internet resources
  • Apply knowledge of and practice sensitivity to cultural diversity and marginalized individuals
  • Practice principles of privacy, confidentiality, and security
  • Interact professionally for the benefit of individuals, groups, communities and systems, utilizing a variety of roles and strategies, such as, advocacy, brokerage, negotiation and mediation
  • Interpret basic research findings
  • Prepare formal reports, correspondence and presentations
  • Communicate professionally, credibly, and persuasively, in written and oral form, with clients, courts, and other audiences
  • Develop projects proposals, design and implement programs and services in a manner that allows for the evaluation of outcomes
