Credential: 4-year Bachelor of Commerce - Financial Services (Honours)

This four-year honours degree program, develops the planning competencies, strong analytical skills, technical knowledge, and professional soft skills needed in today's global financial environment.

The curriculum is designed to provide a combination of theory and active learning approaches, including group work and case analyses that prepare students with the integrated knowledge and practical skills required to succeed.

In third year, students specialize in financial planning, or property and casualty insurance preparing them for career opportunities in banking, insurance, investment management, and estate and financial planning.

Graduates meet the pre-requisite conditions to challenge professional examinations and/or receive advanced standing into the following licences/designations: Personal Financial Planner (PFP), Qualified Associate Financial Planner (QAFP), Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP), and additional licences for insurance and securities.

Conestoga College facilitates recruitment on an ongoing basis - there are no hard deadlines. Typical time frames for work terms are listed below.

Postings are accepted beginning four months before the start of a term until all students have secured employment provided the minimum 12 consecutive weeks of full-time work is met.

Conestoga College collects data on hourly wages of co-operative education students and offers suggested ranges as a service to employers for the purpose of establishing fair and competitive compensation.

Our experience has been that employers increase wages as skills increase, particularly when employing students for more advanced work terms. The Co-operative Education Office can provide assistance to employers in establishing appropriate wage rates.

Work term capabilities

Specific skills and abilities that students are typically capable of performing during a given work term are listed below.

Work terms 1 and 2

Financial Planning

  • Support the Client Relationship Manager and Senior Financial Planners/Financial Planners, to maintain strong relationships with clients, driving engagement and positive client outcomes
  • Assist with the preparation of outstanding financial advice on investments, pension planning, inheritance tax and estate planning, in an efficient manner
  • Perform administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, preparing documentation, and marketing activities
  • Ensure client information is accurate and current
  • Maintain client data integrity in CRM and Client Data processing programs. Maintain a working knowledge of technology and be resourceful as to how technology can assist with business goals
  • Respond to client inquiries in a timely, responsive manner
  • Prepare mailings and other communications in a timely manner
  • Assist with client events and other marketing support as needed
  • Assist clients in implementing plans and executing transactions
  • Assist office with ensuring all regulatory documentation is accurate and up to date

Insurance Sales (Life & Health/Property and Casualty)

  • Support the Producer and/or Agent/Broker, to maintain strong relationships with clients, driving engagement and positive client outcomes of the clients insurance needs.
  • Assist in developing insurance solutions for clients customized to their situation and needs
  • Perform administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, preparing documentation, and marketing activities.
  • Provide ongoing customer service and support to clients.
  • Identify opportunities to increase revenue within the existing client base, recommendations for cross selling or up-selling.
  • Ensure client/insured information is accurate and current.
  • Maintain insured data integrity in CRM and Client Data processing programs.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of technology and be resourceful as to how technology can assist with business goals
  • Prepare mailings and other communications in a timely manner
  • Assist with client events and other marketing support as needed
