Elaboration
Each year, the Centre for Public Sector Labour Relations and Compensation within the Ontario Public Service (“OPS”) distributes a document after contacting religious leaders and/or representatives of each religious/faith group identify and validate holy days that would occur in the coming year for their respective religion/faith group. The events and dates listed reflect the exact information received from leaders/representatives of each religion/faith group. The listed dates in their view require their followers to be absent from work for religious observance purposes.
The listing below was developed for internal administration of the “OPS Religious Holy Days” Policy for OPS employees. It is not a public document and is provided to the Colleges as a courtesy.
Neither CEC nor OPS make any representation as to the validity or accuracy of the information provided. This document is for reference purposes only, and Colleges should confirm any religious holidays requested. Whether an approved religious holy day is paid or unpaid is at the discretion of the College and should be based on the College’s policy.
When a religious holy day falls on a Saturday, Sunday or an unscheduled workday, religious accommodation may not be necessary.
