Attendance Requirements

The Conestoga College Power Engineering team expects students to maintain 100% attendance within the Power Engineering programs.  To be eligible for the TSSA Operating Engineer qualifying time reduction, students must maintain attendance requirements as outlined below:

  • Lectures:  >80% attendance rate for all courses (based on hours)
  • Labs: >90% attendance rate for all courses (based on hours)

Students will be given a written warning if they are approaching the attendance threshold in the program, but the student holds responsibility for their attendance.  Students will be discontinued from the program if they do not maintain the attendance requirements outlined above.

If a student is more than 20 minutes late, or leaves more than 20 minutes early, it will be counted as an absence.  If a student is late for class (<20mins) three times, it will count as an absence.

In advance, students must communicate all absences and lates to their instructor and log them within the student portal.

Instructors will maintain attendance records for each semester and communicate issues to the program coordinator. It is the student's responsibility to make up the missed work. Due to limited shop/lab availability, missed labs may result in a zero mark at the discretion of the faculty.

If a student is to be absent from class due to a religious holiday, arrangements must be made in advance in accordance with Conestoga College's Religious Holy Day and Spiritual Observance Policy and Procedure.

As the Power Engineering Techniques-4th class program is a TSSA-approved program, poor attendance will result in failure to meet the minimum attendance specified to meet TSSA requirements for time reduction. This is a third-party approval.

What does this mean?

A student will not achieve a time reduction in the program, even if the student completes their mandatory educational placement time. The educational placement time would only count day for a day against a 12-month required time if the student is not approved for time reduction by TSSA; hence the student would require another nine (9) months outside college operating in addition to 3 months in-college (if the student completes qualifying time) signed off by the plant chief or designate.

Work Placement Eligibility

Students must successfully complete all previous semesters/courses within their program in order to qualify for a work placement. Students are also required to be in good academic standing within the current semester and must have demonstrated satisfactory attendance and punctuality throughout the program.

All students who participate in a work placement during the course of their program will be required to successfully complete the mandatory Safety in the Workplace course prior to going out on placement.  The course will provide students with an introduction to workplace hazards and general safety awareness. Students will receive a Record of Completion to provide evidence of this training to placement sites and will consent to their workplace insurance coverage.

The Program Coordinator, in consultation with the Program Chair and the academic team, make the final decision regarding eligibility should extenuating circumstances arise. Students who are uncertain of their status should contact their Program Coordinator.

Conestoga College works in partnership with TSSA approved facilities to secure work placements for all the students in the program, but circumstances beyond the control of the College and limitations in the number of available placements may result in not all students securing a work placement.

In some situations students may have a contact at a plant and have arranged their own work placement. In this situation the student is responsible for ensuring the facility they are  completing their work placement with is a TSSA approved facility and the student is required to submit their information to the Program Coordinator for approval prior to confirming their placement.
