Technology Foundations and Engineering Technology Programs Pathways

Overview of Technology Foundations

The Technology Foundations Program equips students for success at college by developing study and time management skills and familiarity with technologies and college resources. Students will upgrade math competency to the level required for Conestoga's engineering technology programs and gain a solid background in physics and computer applications. Full details can be found on the Technology Foundations program website.

From Technology Foundations to Engineering Technology Programs

Technology Foundations graduates may gain admission to these and other programs at the School of Engineering & Technology:

  • Architecture Construction Engineering Technology
  • Civil Engineering Technology
  • Computer Engineering Technology
  • Electrical Engineering Technology
  • Electronics Engineering Technology
  • Energy Systems Engineering Technology
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology - Robotics & Automation
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology - Design & Analysis
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology -  Automated Manufacturing

Graduating from Technology Foundations guarantees admission to the first year of many engineering technology programs provided graduates have simultaneously applied through www.ontariocolleges.ca and earned all credits, achieving a minimum program average of 65% (including a minimum 65% average in both math courses combined). Graduates will receive credit for any applicable courses during the transfer process.

Admission to Technology Foundations

Technology Foundations is primarily designed for high school graduates who wish to pursue a diploma in Engineering Technology, but who do not meet the admission requirements, or are unsure which program is best for them.  Successful graduates of the Technology Foundations program then have the opportunity to be admitted into an Engineering Technology program.

Technology Foundations also accepts transfer students who have completed one or more semesters in an Engineering Technology program, but who are struggling and may have already exceeded the allowable numbers of failures in their first semester (with impending discontinuance). A student may choose to:

i. Consult the Engineering Technology Program Coordinator about proceeding as a part-time student in the fall, making up failed courses and applying for re-admission to their Engineering Technology program; or

ii. Transfer into Technology Foundations as a way to "re-group", to strengthen fundamental skills and to develop better learning and work habits with a more basic curriculum.  Success in a Technology Foundations program may lead to re-admission in the Engineering Technology program. Transfer students should consult the Engineering Technology Program Coordinator about re-admission criteria and procedures.

From Engineering Technology Program to Technology Foundations

Engineering Technology students who wish to transfer to Technology Foundations for the winter semester must consult the Technology Foundations Program Coordinator well before the start of classes in January (mid-December is best).  A program transfer form and course selection form must be completed in consultation with the Program Coordinator.  Some courses reach capacity – the sooner you apply to transfer, the better.

Re-admission to Engineering Technology

Application for re-admission procedures differs depending on the number and level of courses you intend to take after re-admission.

  • Students who re-enter an Engineering Technology program as a full-time semester 1 student must have also applied through OCAS.
  • Students who re-enter an Engineering Technology program with a part-time load (3 courses or fewer) apply directly to Conestoga in Part-time Day Studies.
  • Students who re-enter Engineering Technology as a full-time "special timetable" (>sem1) students, also apply directly to the College.  Contact the Engineering Technology program coordinator for more information.

Caution: It is essential that students who have done poorly in a Engineering Technology program reflect upon their past performance carefully.  Problems must be honestly evaluated, new resolutions must be made, and adjustments to personal factors (i.e. attitude, behaviour, habits, etc,) or circumstances may be required to support renewed effort, commitment, and orientation towards academic goal achievement. Many transfer students make no changes and continue to fail in Technology Foundations, adding another poor semester to their record.  There are other academic options and student supports and services available if you find yourself in academic difficulty.  Both Engineering Technology and Technology Foundations program coordinators would be happy to discuss this with you. For more information about Technology Foundations, please contact the program coordinator.

Students who are prepared to make changes can do well.  It is up to you.

*IMPORTANT NOTE: TRANSFER SHOULD BE DONE BEFORE CLASSES START IN JANUARY

Bridging into Bachelor of Engineering Programs

Overview of Bridging Process

Conestoga College offers the ability for students to progress toward Bachelor of Engineering degree completion. There are three ways for applicants to become admitted to a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree program:

  1. Students can apply to enter level 1 based on their high school marks.
  2. Students with a suitable three-year engineering technology diploma may apply to bridge into a B.Eng. degree; acceptance into the bridging process is based on a case-by-case analysis of each applicant's background and a final interview with the B.Eng. degree bridging panel.  After successful completion of a set of bridging courses, students can enter B.Eng. at an advanced level, either at the second or third-year level.
  3. Students who have partially completed a CEAB-accredited engineering program at another institution may apply to enter a B.Eng. degree with advanced standing.  Acceptance into an advanced level is based on a case-by-case analysis of each applicant's background by the program coordinator in consultation with other B.Eng. degree faculty and the program chair.

Conestoga College's Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degrees are accredited or are preparing for accreditation by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB).  For this reason, B.Eng. degrees must comply with the requirements for credit transfers, bridging, and pathways as established in CEAB's most current "Accreditation Criteria and Procedures Report" found in the Accreditation Resources section of the CEAB's website.  These policies should be referenced in addition to the Credit Transfer Policy and Procedure which are available on the college website and School Handbook. For more information, visit the Credit Transfer webpage and the PLAR webpage

Promotional Decisions for Students Bridging into B.Eng. Programs

Bridging students' acceptance into the B.Eng. program is conditional on successful completion of the assigned bridging course module with an overall bridging GPA of 2.5 over a period of no more than 1.33 years.  Courses failed during the bridging module need to be retaken during the next academic year and this will extend the bridging period to 1.33 years.

In the event that not all bridging courses are passed during the extended 1.33-year bridge, students with an overall bridging GPA of at least 2.0 may reapply for one more four-month bridging term during the fall term of the next academic year.  These students will receive credit for any past bridging courses for which a final mark of 65% was achieved and will need to repeat all other courses.  At the end of the additional four-month term, students will be assessed for eligibility to enter the B.Eng. program based on successfully completing all bridging courses and achieving an overall bridging GPA of at least 2.5.  If at the end of the additional four-month term the candidate has still not met the requirements, no further opportunities will be available to bridge into the B.Eng. program.  In all cases, bridging course credits older than 2.33 years will not be considered.

Period Required to Graduate

Students who enter the program by bridging or advanced standing must complete the program in the normal time required to complete the remaining levels plus one year. Leaves of absence or exceptions must be approved by the Program Coordinator and Program Chair.
