Program description - May 2025
There is a growing demand for skilled trade workers in Canada, and Conestoga College is meeting this demand by offering a variety of skilled trades education. Are you interested in learning how to become a welder or metal fabricator? This program might be right for you! This one-year program covers all the theoretical and practical learning outcomes for Level 1 of both the Welder (456A) and Metal Fabricator – Fitter (437A) apprenticeship programs in Ontario. As a student in this program, you will have the opportunity to develop welding skills in our state-of-the-art facility, using modern equipment with the common arc welding processes such as Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW or 'stick'), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW or 'MIG'), Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW or 'TIG'). If you decide to pursue an apprenticeship in either trade, you may be exempt from this level of in-school training. You will be provided opportunities to challenge welding skills qualification tests as required by the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB). (Extra fees payable to this external weld testing authority will apply; these tests are optional.) The instructors in our programs combine years of teaching experience with decades of work in the welding industry. As a graduate of this program, you’ll be ready for an apprenticeship as a welder or metal fabricator. For more information, contact the Program Coordinator at welding@conestogac.on.ca.
