Cabinetmaker (Apprenticeship)

Program description

This 720-hour program, consisting of three 240-hour levels, is designed to provide you with theoretical knowledge of all aspects of cabinetmaking, as well as the practical training necessary to complement your on-the-job training experience. Completion of this program confers the graduate an Ontario College Certificate titled Manufacturing Techniques - Cabinetmaker Apprenticeship.For more information, please visit the Woodworking Centre of Ontario website.

Program outcomes

  1. Complete cabinetmaking projects and tasks in compliance with health and safety regulations and woodworking industry standards.
  2. Select and use the appropriate types and applications of joinery and fastening systems used in the construction of cabinetmaking and industrial woodworking to ensure solid construction of cabinets.
  3. Create and interpret drawings, production blueprints and layout procedures for production, planning, and estimating.
  4. Select, maintain, and safely operate hand tools, portable power tools and stationary trade-related machinery.
  5. Grade and select appropriate lumber and materials for industry-related projects.
  6. Perform sanding and adhesive operations to industry standards.
  7. Select and apply finishes and hardware to complete the construction of cabinets and industrial woodworking pieces.
  8. Apply trade calculations correctly to cabinetmaking applications.

Graduate opportunities

Cabinetmakers use a variety of woods and laminates to construct and repair wooden cabinets, furniture, and architectural woodwork/millwork products for various residential, commercial and industrial uses. They are employed by furniture manufacturing or repair companies, construction companies and cabinetmaking contractors, or they may be self-employed.
