Welcome to the Centre for Smart Manufacturing (CSM)
Supporting the needs of our industry and community partners has been central to Conestoga's vision since our establishment in 1967. Our long history of collaboration with the region's manufacturing sector has resulted in many successes. The establishment of degree programming in the areas of engineering and information technology, along with increased capacity in the delivery of applied research, has clearly demonstrated Conestoga's ability to help transform ideas into innovation, accelerating new ideas along the commercialization path into new jobs and new market opportunities.
CSM will focus on two main industry requirements within applied research activities:
- High-Performance Manufacturing
- ICT-Enabled Intelligent Manufacturing
High-performance manufacturing relates to the mechanical, electrical, software, and process designs to enhance the adaptability of production, the precision and quality of products or processes, the integration of new materials into products or processes, and the implementation of new sensor technologies for manufacturing.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) enabled intelligent manufacturing relates to the mechanical, electrical, software, and process designs that will advance and extend the possibilities of automation control, the simulation and visualization of products and processes, and the enhancement of technology for trades within manufacturing.
Outcomes from many of these projects can potentially improve the sustainability of manufacturing. Sustainable manufacturing relates to the mechanical, electrical, software and process designs to develop and implement technologies for more environmentally friendly and responsible products and processes (with the implementation of new materials, software, and processes) while allowing those products and processes to be cost-effective. The new Centre will provide a critical resource for SMEs in our region to achieve performance improvements that will advance them into the next generation of manufacturing. By facilitating applied research and the development of innovative business processes, CSM will become an important driver of innovation, commercialization, productivity improvement and competitiveness for Ontario's manufacturing sector.
Opportunities with the Centre for Smart Manufacturing
The CSM is currently seeking government funding, university partners, organizational and focused groups (local, provincial, and national), and community businesses to steer the early applied research opportunities for the centre. If you are interesting in participating with the CSM, please contact the CARI office.
